Begun in 1981, the ALWR began its life as the Virginia All Lutheran Women’s Retreat when women of the Missouri Synod, Lutheran Church in America, and American Lutheran Church gathered for a week-end of Bible study, worship and fellowship. When the ELCA was created and Metro Synod included Maryland, the name was changed to reflect the changing geographical area.
